What is a Binocular?
The functioning of binoculars is based on the principles of light refraction, distance and light reflection. When
the binoculars are pointed at an distant object, the light rays from the object falls on the objective lens. The objective lens picks up the light rays and makes a focused image. This image is picked up by the smaller lens and is then
magnified. The magnified image is then sent to the prism. It flips the image and sends it to the eyepiece to make a threedimensional image, available for viewing by the human eye.

Why Mariner’s use 7×50 ?
The navies of the world generally use 7×50 binoculars on their ships. These offer a 7.1 mm exit pupil, and gather all the light eyes can use. They also offer a good field of view, and as much magnification as is practical from a moving vessel. The first number indicates the strength of magnification (how many times closer the subject is to you, 7 times closer) and the second number is the size of the objective lens measured in millimeters going across the lens. The size of the objective lens will determine how much light the binocular can obtain for effective viewing. The higher the number, the larger the lens; in effect allowing more light to pass through thereby projecting a brighter image and viewing
experience.
